Catalysts and Ligands

Resolution of chiral molecules can often be a particularly inefficient means of producing single enantiomers, with the need to dispose or recycle the unwanted enantiomer.

Asymmetric catalysis offers significant advantages over resolution by enabling the production of just the desired enantiomer and thereby effectively doubling manufacturing plant capacity.

Asymmetric catalysis can also:
• reduce the overall number of manufacturing steps
• reduce chemical and energy inputs/costs
• minimise environmental impact

Despite these obvious advantages, asymmetric catalysis remains under-utilised at an industrial scale. The single biggest factor which accounts for this is the lack of ligands available at a reasonable price in multi kg quantities. Celtic Catalysts raison d’etre is to address this issue.
